West End Scenes 1955 - 1956 Harold N. Ouye Home Movie Reel 103
This film - captured between 1955-1956 and presented in a full frame scan of the original 70 year old 8mm home movie - shows scenes from Sacramento's West End during the days before redevelopment would change the face of Sacramento forever. We see men milling about and sleeping on the sidewalk; police and fire trucks driving through the neighborhood; street scenes; Tower Bridge; passing trains; the intersection of 4th and L streets; Japantown; people walking; street scenes shot from a car while driving; K Street decorated for Christmas; closed businesses; businesses with "Moving" and "Sale" signs; Taylor's Drug Store; Ouye's Pharmacy; houses; and an official demolition ceremony with speakers (a business behind the ceremony has a sign up that says "You may be next"). There are also shots of newspaper ads and articles about redevelopment, Proposition B, and the West End's demolition.
From the Harold N. Ouye collection (MS195) at the Center for Sacramento History.

Moved out thank god. It was a great home for 40 years but, I got the hell out and got some land! It does suck though.😜
They don't exist
One comment said to look up John Todd Tapes. The research shows he was a conspiracy theorist and satanic panic promoter who preached against witchcraft and was sentenced for a long time for rape before he died.
They couldn't (or wouldn't) make this film now because of the homeless population.
There's always room for Jello!!
My mom is in this video! At the 4:34 mark with the soda can in hand.
Unbelievable & Incredible. "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" Sagan quote comes often with this amazing Story non belief. It was not taken seriously, NYT courageously denied until that day. All people had was tv images.
the biggest fake
That second person interviewed is one beautiful woman.
Looks like Dude has a copy of axis bold as love in his hand as he interviews them//?????
I get the feeling that Mitch Mitchell would put a fly in your soup and laugh about it after you ate it. Great drummer, though
Нарезка разных кадров... В 1964 году они исполняли Some other guys? Похоже на подделку.... И ещё I saw her standing there. Видимо, этот человек не то сделал... 😢
I lived in Rio Linda at the time remember it well
If they havent seen it it does not exist
23:30, cute 80s ass
Krantz' estimation of their low numbers versus the huge number of sightings has a major disconnect.
I love the architecture of the late 70’s early 80’s industrial parks in Sac. The buildings bring back fond memories of visiting my Dad @ work.
Wow, what memories this brings to mind. I was 7 we lived on Sierra Blvd. just down from the “crooked bridge”…. My dad opened all the windows and doors and had us all go outside. We had a BBQ with the neighbors…. We had a few cracked windows and some cracked plaster in our 75 + year old house. I remember packing my little suitcase with as many stuffed animals as possible…. Crazy times for sure!
I used to walk across that bridge every day to go to RHS from Grove St. I wasn't born yet when this happened but the stories are fascinating.
I still go to Lou's Burgers when I'm in town. Where they talk about the fire station that couldn't go across the street to put out a fire sounds like the North Highlands and Rio Linda fire departments when the line between the districts was Watt Ave
I remember this day quite clearly. We lived in a Citrus Heights, I was nine years old and we started hearing the bombs go off. I remember my dad got a ladder and got up on the roof of the house with binoculars to see what was going on. After he found out it was the Roseville train yard right near the town of Antelope where his friend lived. He got us in the car and decided to head over there to check on him. Yeah, I’m not saying my dad was very bright. Anyway, as we got to Cirby, the police had the roads blocked. They would not let my dad in the area, probably best. So we went home and watched what we could on the news. I heard they found another bomb a few years ago while they were doing some construction.
I want one ! I want a Charlie Brown pillow doll ❤❤❤
I'm from the UK and was 2 yrs and 10 months old when this happened so dont remember it but found out about it through yt ect .....im so glad no one lost thier life in this ! BUT IT IS INTERSTING TO SEE that if you look on google maps in 2024 you can see how since then ANTELOPE HAS EXPANDED as a town .....nothing but green fields either side of the goods yard back then ...now if you look in 2024 its ALL urbanised with houses , buissneses right next to the yard ect ....god forbid if anything like this happened again at the roseville yard as the loss of life would be great and the prperty damage would go into the millions of dollars! ...its no wonder ( even now) they are finding unexploded bombs at the yard when upgrading it that are VERY likely from the 1973 explosion that were missed by being buried in the ground from the explosions BUT not detonating! .....Luckily they know the history of the yard ect so if they find some unexploded ordanace they evacute the entire area now !
Thank you for being a friend. Travel down the road and back again. Your heart is true, you're a pal and a confidant. And if you threw a party, invited everyone you knew. You would see the biggest gift would be from me and the card attached would say, thank you for being a friend. 👵🏻
She's beautiful!
I don't think I would ever rent from her
what happened to that commercial that said "come to state fair, fun everywhere, and what a sight to seeee"?
lol still has the same furniture today
The guy who shot bigfoot, said he saw it like as a matter of fact. I believe he seen the beast. That big hairy beasty.
Where were all these shacks?
Our best guest is that they are the shacktowns that were around North B and North C streets, like Louie’s Camp. We posted on them a few years ago: facebook.com/ctrsactohistory/posts/pfbid0RVGjR1TnGViqcs2Ydf75SsrpVnnr89kiMmNKifgmxTMgdr3b4v9N31vk9uc6nzF4l
I miss Tommy's Joynt. And all of San Francisco. Hell, I just miss California as a whole. I was gentrified out many years ago, but my heart aches everyday for my home from over here in the UK.
Scary as possible remember that even the nicest people can be monsters!
This was GREAT!
Thanks for this!
She did such horrifically horrible things to those people, and I don't know how someone can be that evil
The poor girl at 9:36 is having a breakdown
I love the interviewer’s response at the end! “…hand me a candle.” I wasn’t expecting it, but it illustrates the fascinating allure of witchcraft 😍✨♥️🌀 Thanks for posting 🙏
HAR! HAR! HAR! USSR YOU LOST! USA! USA! USA!
Yeah they never were strong on Movies. Then again.... Soviets on the Moon (1965) /1oer2Ph1IP4
I still love SacTown. Man, I had so much fun when I went to UC Davis and would hang with my Buddies at Sac State...mid 80's early 90s! I grew up in Stockton, but SacTown has a large special place in my heart going to school and working there. I really do miss the fishing too!
I do remember when the Capitol Building was neing remodeled in the 70s.
AFDC to ssi disability
I highly recomend the Old City Cemetery Tour
Man...i miss this old stuff.
I first stepped foot in Sacramento off the California Zephyr at the 19th St. Union Pacific station in 1955.
I love Californias haunted gold country. So many spots of unfortune, untimely death and strangeness.
I was 15 and lived less than 4 miles from this.
From this film one would believe that Sactown might be a good place to live, but just compare these scenes then to what it has degraded down to now, HOMELESS capital of the world. Can you say "Ghetto" ?
These films are such a gift
I love the elevator music at the end!😅
What if bigfoot identifies as a human??😮
I wonder if there s such a thing as a gay sasquatch. 😮
Oh he/she may be gender FLUID 🙄
Considering how close they are to San Francisco........!
